Brooklyn based music duo Dave + Sam created the anthem “You Da Shit Girl” which has caught the eye of ESSENCE Magazine dubbing this song a much needed “pick me up.” The visual was created by Swimmmers Ear (Whitney McGuire & Norvis Junior) in Brooklyn, NY’s historic Bedford-Stuyvesant. The video also hosts cameos by Donwill of Tanya Morgan, Anna Wise and more.
“I’ve always thought of Chicago House as ratchet jams about love and inspiration,” says Dave. “‘You Da Shit’ is the result of Sam wanting to make a house record and me needing to make a record my wife could dance to. After a year of living with it, I knew we made a song relatable to almost anyone.”
“To me, “you da shit” extends to our communities as well,” says director Whitney McGuire. “Thanks to my formal legal training and my current career as an attorney, I recognize patterns in society and the ways certain communities are impacted by these patterns. I understand that in order to conquer a people, they must be divided. Observing the rhetoric being recycled in mass media and on social media, I do my best to counter these patterns, to plant the seeds of love (of self and others), empowerment, progress.”
Effortlessly, Dave + Sam exalt women as the beautiful, complex and powerful beings they are. This anthem will surely be the voice of not just magical black women but beautiful women everywhere.
