#FreshInterview: Who is @MobSquadJay?

Over the last couple of months we’ve posted content from South Carolina’s own “Young Jay”, and each time we’ve posted his music his fan base has shared our post like crazy over social media. Up until this point we really didn’t know too much about the“Gullah Geechie” representative so we decided to reach out to him and ask him a couple of question so we can get to know the “Voice of The Dirt Road” Young Jay. We asked Jay about his start in the game, what motivates him and a couple of other questions so that we can showcase the talented emcee, and dig into the psyche to find out what makes Young Jay’s drive so strong. How did you come up with the name & concept?

Coming up everybody called me Jay so I just added the young and ran with it.

If you could define your sound to someone who hasn’t heard or seen you, how would describe your sound?

Like a breath of fresh air man something totally different from what anybody else doing. I ain’t really into following the wave I just kind of doing me.

We see that you’ve been getting some major love on the blogs, how do you feel about the new found recognition and how do you want to translate this new love into success?

I really appreciate da love. Coming from where I come from it’s big to have people paying attention and actually taking me serious. I’m just gonna keep working and hopefully da movement keep spreading.

What inspires you?

The love and the feedback I get from my music is what inspires me and keep me going. Real bars inspire me too. Anytime I hear somebody really snapping it make me want to go in too.

What’s your view on the overall perception of “Southern Rap” and do you feel you have to make gimmick style music to win?

I feel like the south been running the game for years and we been the tastemakers in da industry for years no matter how you perceive it. I don’t need no gimmicks or nothing like that I’m gone just do me, that’s what’s going to win for me.

What is the “Geechie South” about and tell us about growing up in South Carolina?

I think u referring to the Gullah Geechie community. I’m not going to get into the technical side of it. I just know I was born and raised in it. It’s our culture, our dialect, our way of life. Growing up in SC is just like growing up anywhere in America man trouble easy to get into and hard to get out of. But it’s all on you what you invest your energy into.

How do you feel about the current state of Hip-Hop? What do you like/dislike?

I feel like hip hop is in a good space right now. It’s a lot of people really rapping again so I think real rap is coming back to the forefront. A lot of people like to talk about “Mumble Rap” but I feel like that balance is necessary.

We see that your new project “Geechie Gospel” is doing well on your Soundcloud, will we see any videos from the project?

Yea man we gearing up to shoot that “Poppin” video. “Love at First Sight” is da single we running with so we definitely going to shoot a visual to that.

If you could work with any artist/producer who would it be and why would you want to work with them?

I would say Jay-Z because he the GOAT to me. Plus, I want to see if I can hold mah own with Hov on da track. As far as producers I gotta go with Metro Boomin cuz we around da same age and he putting on for da young niggas right now.

What are some of your favorite records that you’ve put out?

The Geechie Gospel Intro is one of my favorite just because da feeling it give me. Plus, all my records I did with mah dawg Stump cuz he ain’t here no more to see how dis shit done progressed.

What do you want people to know about Young Jay?

I want people to know this just the beginning. This just the tip of the iceberg for Young Jay man. I’m keep going hard, keep growing, and keep working until we legendary status.

Where do you see Young Jay 5 years from now?

Touring, doing this music man. Creating a business that can sustain itself and open up doors for my people. Doing what I love to do.
